BSO calls for Fani-Kayode

By Levinus Nwabughiogu
ABUJA-Buhari Support Organization, BSO, has alleged that the federal government has entered into an unholy alliance with some Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs with an aim of declaring the PDP winner in the states where the res

ults are yet to be declared public.
The Organization also called for the arrest of the Director, Media and Publicity unit of the PDP presidential campaign organization, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode for announcing on Sunday that PDP was already leading in 23 states even when the independent National Electoral Commission, INEC was yet to official declare the results.
BSO spoke through its Media and Publicity Director, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe in a press conference yesterday in Abuja.
Maduekwe however asked APC and Buhari supporters to remain calm.
He said “As we speak, the PDP-led federal government has directed some state REC who haven’t publicly announced results to declare PDP as the winner in their various states and let APC go to court. We ask Nigerians to join us in saying, “No”, to this recent manifestation of habitual impunity.
“We appeal to all our numerous supporters to sustain their calmness in the face of current provocation and abuse of our electoral processes.
“We strongly condemn in its entirety, the recent outburst and blatant misinformation of the general public by Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode that the PDP is already leading in 23 states of the federation. This claim is a total breach of the electoral act and is designed to cause the breach of peace. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari had repeatedly emphasised to his supporters to maintain calmness in that face of provocation by the ruling party. This recent utter exhibition of lawlessness enmeshed in the typical character of impunity by PDP is unacceptable.
“We ask the security agencies to immediately effect the arrest of Mr. Fani-Kayode for breaching relevant sections of the electoral act which forbids any organ outside INEC from officially declaring election results. His arrest for further questioning will be a clear indication that the security agencies are truly unbiased participants in this electoral process as this declaration is also a breach of both the 1st and 2nd Abuja Peace Accord.
“We call on the international community and observers to note the steps being taken by PDP to cause severe breach of peace and call them to order. We also ask our supporters to maintain the peace as we await the official announcement from INEC of the authentic result for the March 28th elections.”

South-west results should be splited by Jonathan and Buhari-Gani Adams

By Dapo Akinrefon
Otunba Gani Adams is the National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC. In this interview, he absolves the OPC of any form of attack during one of its rally in Lagos.
He also reacts to the allegation by the All Progressives Congress, APC, that it collected N9 billion from the presidency to destabilize the South-west. Excerpts:
Adams
Adams
Angryreactions greeted the protest rally your group organised in Lagos, but what informed this rally?
We protested against the shortage of the Permanent Voter  Cards, PVCs. More than 5 million in the South West have not gotten their PVCs, likewise, there are shortages of the PVCs in the South East and South South. In the North East, which is the base of the Boko Haram insurgency, INEC has says it has distributed close to 90 per cent. But in the South west, states like Lagos state has not gotten up to 60 per cent of the cards, it is only Ondo State that has gotten up to 75 per cent of their PVCs and the elections is just days away.
The second issue is that of under aged children, who have been registered in the North which is against the stipulated age of 18 years who are eligible to vote in Nigeria. Another is the illegal creation of the 30,000 polling units for the north by the Professor Jega-led INEC. These three cogent reasons, if not solved can affect free, fair and credible elections on March 28.
But why are you just protesting now?
We addressed a press conference believing that Jega will address the issue. Rather than address these issues, the Arewa Consultative Forum decided to portray us in bad light saying that I was seeking relevance.
But the All Progressives Congress, APC, accused President Goodluck Jonathan of funding the OPC to destabilize the South West, how true is this?
The APC should be very careful with their remarks. These are childish allegations. Because we held a peaceful procession,   the APC spokesperson issued a statement that the Federal Government has given us   a N9 billion contract.
But is this true?
There is actually a contract but it is not N9 billion, the contract is to secure the pipelines in the South west. People in the South south have been benefiting from it, the contract issue did not only arise now. The APC had earlier raised alarm that the federal government should not give us the contract and that was when the Navy and Army were brought in, but when the damaging of pipelines continued, oil theft and vandalisation in places like Arepo, Atlas Cove, they realized that this job should be given to the communities. They also realized that the OPC has members in all of these communities, government decided to approve the contract.
The contract is only meant to create jobs for the unemployed and save our common wealth. We are talking of losing N1.3 trillion annually from theft of crude oil and they believe that the money is not too much to protect our pipelines.
That is the reason APC is raising dust that N9billion was awarded. The contract will be three months for test running.
The APC decided to misinform Nigerians so that those who would want to join the rally would believe it withdraw. They wanted Nigerians to believe that the rally was economical but it is not. We thank that God put them to shame.
But is it true that during the rally, some of your members vandalized billboards of the APC?
Sensing that they did not succeed in stopping the rally, because they felt we did not have large followers, they sent pictures of a rally that was held in 2011. This was a rally held in 2011 by a group to protest that Boko Haram should not come to the South west.
It was alleged that some traditional rulers were financially induced to endorse a president Goodluck Jonathan’s second term ambition. What is your take on this?
That is one of the damages the APC is doing to Yoruba land. Where is the evidence that traditional rulers were given $250,000? Have we gotten to a stage where we damage the integrity of our traditional rulers?.
The late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, did not abuse any traditional ruler in his days. The traditional rulers are fathers to all irrespective of party affiliations and their subjects have a right to bring their candidates to pay homage to the monarchs.
Nobody stopped Buhari not to visit the Ooni of Ife, the Obubadan of Ibadan, the Soun of Ogbomosho. I don’t know where the APC got the information that our traditional rulers got $250,000 to endorse Jonathan. WhT is $250,000 to the Ooni of Ife? The monarch is a multi billionaire even before he became the Ooni of Ife. Likewise the Alafin of Oyo, the Awujale of Ijebuland, Alake of Egba land. What will they do with such paltry sum?
With due respect to the APC, they should not derogate our traditional institution. They are the custodians of our tradition and culture, they should not damage our traditional institution because of their ambition. You have the right to convince anyone who does not support you but you should not assassinate someone else’s character because he or she did not support you.
The APC should desist from these acts because we have done a lot to propagate the culture of Yoruba land and sustain our heritage. I don’t see any reason that anyone who did not support Tinubu or Buhari’s ambition would be alleged of financial inducement. That was how they alleged that Afennifere and Yoruba Council of Elders collected from Jonathan. They even accused the President of frequenting the South-west.
I was coming to that, why do you think the president has been visiting the South-west at the slightest opportunity especially in the last three weeks?
When you know the importance of the zone, you should constantly visit the place. As a good politician, you have to seek support. Jonathan is not the kind of person that will sit somewhere and expect to win. For you to judge your popularity, you need to meet the people and interact with them because the last chunk of the votes comes from the South west especially Lagos State.
The president has realized that he must not lose Lagos and that is why he is consistent in Lagos state to meet the people. I think that is part of his strategy and I think the APC can borrow a leaf from them, they are too confident in themselves.
But why is the South west divided between Buhari and Jonathan?
It has always been like that. There is no candidate in the history of Nigeria that a zone will have hundred per cent support.
In the 2011 presidential election, we had some people in the South-west who voted for Buhari, Ribadu and Jonathan, it is always like that.

Persecution of Christians in the North

Morning Star News is reporting that an attack in Nigeria that killed 18 Christians has capped two years of Islamic aggression. It says that Muslim Fulani herdsmen are suspected in another deadly assault in the area.
The news agency's Nigeria correspondent wrote that Hosea Mashaf was resting in his village of Chirang Mangor, Nigeria, when area Christian youths told him that armed, Muslim Fulani herdsmen were attacking the Christian village of Mile Bakwai.
The 45-year-old farmer and other Christians rushed to Mile Bakwai, three kilometres away in the Bokkos Local Council Area of Plateau State, the night of March 27 to see how they might aid the Christians there, he told Morning Star News.
"When we got there, the gunmen had already retreated," Mashaf said. "I saw dead bodies scattered all over the village. I counted the dead bodies we recovered, and in all we had 18 Christians who were killed by the Muslim attackers."
They found five of those bodies in a minibus, he said.
"They were travelling in a bus back to our village when they ran into the attack going on at Mile Bakwai village," Mashaf said.
"They were killed by the attackers when they shot at the bus, which crashed into a building, but the attackers went to the place where the bus was and shot the occupants. Five of them were killed, while two others were injured."
Dead were Geofrey Mafuyai, 35; Mahana Jamok, 50; Arandon Yusuf, 18; Dung Dalyop, 38; and, Mbata Machif, 36. Maju Mahana, 25, and Nanle Enoch, 18 were wounded and received treatment at the ECWA Evangel Hospital in Jos, he said.
The 18 slain were members of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Christ Apostolic Church and Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN) congregations, sources said. The Reverend James Danladi Mahwash of the Bishara Baptist Church in Mile Bakwai village said five of his church members were killed, including the financial secretary of the Men's Missionary Union of his church, 25-year-old Jamle Benjamin Sunday.
"At about 8pm the attackers, all Muslim Fulani herdsmen, came into this village in two separate groups, attacking us from two different directions, and shooting down anyone they saw," he said.
"They came from the northwestern end of the village, and then separated into two groups with one of the groups attacking from the western end, while the second group attacked from the eastern end."
The Morning Star Nigerian correspondent continued by saying that besides Sunday, Mahwash said, among those killed were Kokiwo Malo, 65; Maren Galadima, 18; Gambo Geofrey Mafuyai, 45; Adamu Maren, 55; Zoron Adamu, 10; Maren Garba, 20; Danladi Mangar, 20; Joel Peter, 20; Boaz Masara, 20; Oge Emeka, 5; and one identified only as Jang from the neighboring village of Kunet.
The assailants also burned the houses of three Christians - Malo Kabu, Marion Bitrus and Mapu Daniel - in Mile Bakwai, "Seventh Mile" in the Hausa language as it is about seven miles from the main mining camp at Tenti village. Mile Bakwai is a former mining camp in the rocky hills of the Jos Plateau, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Jos.
In several previous attacks, the herdsmen robbed the 150-member church of about 211,000 naira (US$1315), Mahwash added.
"We believe that our attackers are Muslim Fulani herdsmen," he said. "We know they have been attacking Christian communities in rural areas across central Nigerian states. We are not happy about this and feel that the Nigerian government has to do something urgently to curtail these attacks in order to save lives and restore peace in the northern part of this country."
The correspondent went on to say that ethnic Fulani Muslims are believed to have the backing of Islamic extremist groups in attacks on Christian areas in central and northern Nigeria. The Reverend Barnabas Kebang, chairman of the Bokkos Regional Church Council of COCIN, said the attack on Mile Bakwai was one of numerous assaults against Christians in the area.
"Since the year 2011, over 100 Christians have been killed here," he said.
Christian communities attacked include those in the villages of Mushu, Tsohon Mushu, Marish, Ruboi, Wumat, Magi, Gada Biyu, Batish, Butura Gida, Pyakmalu, Mper, Ruwi, Chenget, Njukkudel and Washen, Kebang said.
Kebang, who as chair of the regional church council over 46 COCIN pastors oversees about 11,000 church members, was blunt about the identity of the culprits.
"Muslim Fulani herdsmen are responsible for these attacks," he said.
After attacking Christian communities, Fulani herders "usually go out there to dish out false information to the world through their Islamic backers in the Middle East, using the Western press," Kebang said. As result, he said, international press tend to misrepresent Muslim aggression as "sectarian conflict", especially when Christians try to defend themselves.
Security agencies reported arresting six of the dozens of Muslims who attacked Mile Bakwai, but said five of those were killed during gun-battle during between the assailants and law enforcement forces, Kebang said. Reports he received from the Special Task Force created to stem violence indicated one of the Muslim attackers said 46 attackers participated in the assault on Mile Bakwai.
Kebang said the attack displaced nearly 500 Christians.
"We have about 140 of our church members displaced in this particular attack, and you can see them right here in the church premises," Kebang said from his office in Bokkos in mid-April. "About 300 other Christians displaced in the attack are right now at the St Thomas Catholic Church here in Bokkos, and another group of about 13 are camped at the Christ Apostolic Church also here in Bokkos town."
The Morning Star News Nigeria correspondent stated that besides hit-and-run attacks by Fulani Muslims, the Islamic extremist Boko Haram group has targeted Christians in Nigeria in its effort to destabilise the government and impose sharia (Islamic law) nationwide. The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar II, considered the leader of Nigeria's Muslims, has called for a halt to attacks on Christians, but Kebang said area Muslims either deny or don't know of the directive.
"In different forums where we have met to dialogue with Muslim leaders here in Plateau state, we have heard Muslim and Fulani leaders saying bluntly that they will not listen to anyone or act in a peaceful manner until the Sultan of Sokoto directs," he said.
Sokoto is the base of the Caliphate, a Fulani oligarchy established centuries ago.
The sultan also recently called on the Nigerian government to grant amnesty to Boko Haram, but the Islamic extremist sect's leader, Abubakar Shekau, has rejected the idea, claiming the group has not committed any crime warranting amnesty.
"Christians make up 51.3 percent of Nigeria's population of 158.2 million and live mainly in the south, while Muslims account for 45 percent and reside primarily in the north, according to Operation World," concluded the correspondent.

Nigerians will get the results within 48hours-Jega

BY JUDE OPARA, ABUJA

As Nigerians go to the polls tomorrow in the presidential and national assembly elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will announce the result of the elections within 48 hours after voting.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega who revealed this Friday, during a joint press briefing with the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi said the electoral body has put everything in place to ensure a hitch free exercise.

He said that the use of the card reader and the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will make it easier for the commission to conduct an election that will be free, fair and credible in line with international best practices even as he equally used the opportunity to clear the air on an allegation by some politicians that he was planning to aid the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the card reader contrary to the allegation has no master key but a security chip which can only be breached when the card is cut.
Chairman of the Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega

Jega also revised the argument whether voters should vote and go home or stay for the result to be announced, saying the statement of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba that people should go home after voting was only advisory.

“There is no controversy whether people should vote and go or stay. People should remain to know who wins in their polling unit as long as they remain calm. The statement of the IG is only advisory.”

The INEC boss also revealed that the elections will take place in all the 119,973 polling units across the country even as he added that there is no polling unit with more than 750 voters because where that occurs they should be broken into voting points.

Respect To Nigeria Army As they Recapture Boko haram stronghold

Nigeria’s military on Friday announced that troops had retaken the town of Gwoza from Boko Haram, from which the group declared their caliphate last year.
“Troops this morning captured Gwoza destroying the Headquarters of the Terrorists self-styled Caliphate,” Defence Headquarters in Abuja said on Twitter.

A voter on arriving the polling station on Saturday will meet a team of between four and five polling officers. The voter will, on arrival, join the queue for accreditation and when it gets to his or her turn, the voter will handover the Permanent Voter’s Card, PVC to an assistant presiding officer, APO, whose duty it is to check the authenticity of the card using the card reader.nigeria-decides
The card reader will prop up the bio-data of the voter including his picture and fingerprints if they are genuine. If they are not, the prospective voter is advised to immediately leave the polling area as the rules require the presiding officer to immediately handover the person to the police if he or she refuses to leave.
If the card reader authenticates the voter as having a valid INEC voter’s card, he will be taken through the next step of the accreditation process which is the biometrics. This is done by placing either the index finger or thumb at the top of the card reader for the purpose of matching the fingerprint with the one embedded in the voter card. If it matches, the card reader will pop up a sound to affirm so.
However, if the card reader does not read the finger print, the presiding officer will issue the prospective voter an incident form where the voter will put down his or her details.
At the end of accreditation officially by 1.00 pm, voting will begin and the supervisory presiding officer and his assistants will then arrange the voters in an orderly manner starting from the first person to arrive the voting area.
The voter will mention the number which was given to him or her during the accreditation and this will guide the presiding officer to check the INEC register to cross check that it was still the same person that was accredited that has turned up to vote.
If confirmed that the person was the same person accredited earlier, the presiding officer will issue him a ballot paper to go and exercise his franchise.
The Assistant Polling Officer (APO) who has the responsibility of issuing the ballot papers to the voter will issue three ballot papers, one red for the presidential; black for the Senate election and green for the House of Representatives election.
At the end of the voting, the INEC officials would first ensure that all the ballot papers for the three elective offices are sorted together. Ballots that were mistakenly put in the wrong boxes would be sorted into the correct boxes and then the votes for each of the candidates would be counted. At the end of the exercise, the results would be displayed in a conspicuous place around the station while a copy would be taken to the collation center at the ward level.

No Cash in the Bank and Why by CBN'S GOV.

Election spending fuels cash shortage in banks

CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele
The massive withdrawal of cash from Deposit Money Banks by politicians and their associates in preparation for the general elections has led to shortage of cash across bank branches in the country.
It was gathered on Thursday that several billions of naira had left the banking system between December last year and this month as different political parties spent huge amounts on their campaigns.
“Many banks are having it rough in terms of liquidity. Huge deposits running into several billions of naira have been withdrawn for election campaigns by politicians. This has affected some of the banks. So, liquidity issue is of utmost concern right now,” a top official of a tier one bank told our correspondent.
According to other sources close to the situation, some lenders have had to postpone some obligations due to liquidity problems.
“Banks have been calling and pleading with some investors not to terminate maturing fixed-income debts as a result of liquidity problems; some bankers are also not lending not necessarily because of uncertainties in the economy, but due to lack of liquidity,” a banker added.
A number of politicians, he said, had also sold their properties below the real values in a bid to raising funds for campaigns.
Our correspondent, who visited some bank branches in Lagos and Ogun states on Wednesday and Thursday, observed that hundreds of customers came to withdraw money from their accounts more in anticipation of problems during and after the presidential election on Saturday.
However, many of the customers were disappointed because they could not get the amounts they requested across the counter and Automated Teller Machines.
Bank officials said some customers were making panicky cash withdrawals to make provision for their families in case of security problems after the elections.
A bank official told our correspondent that it was a sign of liquidity problem for banks to keep giving excuses of network breakdown and employ delay tactics to force some of their customers to leave in frustration without being unable to make withdrawals.
The Managing Director, Afrinvest Asset Management Company Limited, the research and investment arm of Afrinvest West Africa Limited, Mr. Ola Belgore, said political spending in the run up to elections usually affected the banking system and the economy in general, citing the examples of what happened in previous polls.
Belgore is of the opinion that some banks are currently experiencing liquidity problems because a significant part of the huge funds leaving the banking system for election campaigns is currently held in the informal sector.
This, he said, was so because a major part of the population was still unbanked.
“Even though there is a lot of outflow out of the banking system, the bulk of it is being stored in the informal sector at the moment because a large number of Nigerians are still unbanked,” he noted.
The Managing Director, Dunn Loren Merrifield Asset Management Limited, Mr. Tola Odukoya, who stated that the relationship between political spending and the banking system was usually an inverse one, noted that the onset of the general elections had had serious adverse effects on the financial system.
According to him, beyond the political spending, the increased risks occasioned by the general elections have also made several foreign portfolio investors to hold back from investing in the country.
This, he said, had led to major drawbacks in economic activities, adding that “the effect of the onset of the general elections on the financial system has not been palatable.”
Outlining other factors that had compounded the banks’ liquidity problems, the investment expert said, “The effects of monetary and fiscal policies in the last several months have also impacted negatively on banks’ liquidity. The effects of the lower crude oil prices on the economy means the federal and state governments now have less money to share.
“We also see the increase in the Cash Reserve Ratio of public sector deposits to 75 per cent as a factor. On the back of this, we also see the implementation of the Treasury Single Account; this means banks do not have access to funds belonging to the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government. From these, a lot of liquidity has been sucked out of the banking system.
“The adverse effect of the not-too-favourable economic conditions in the last six months and the inflationary effects of the devaluation of the naira have reduced the income of the average household; this has also led to reduction in household savings. So, it will be difficult for banks to be very liquid in the face of all these factors. Some banks may be more liquid that the others.”

My thoughts for Nigeria in the next 4 years- President Jonathan

My vision of Nigeria in four years by Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan’s vision of Nigeria is one of a rosy future built on a secured environment, robust and diversified economy and well laid infrastructure to guarantee good life to all Nigerians.
In articulating his vision of where he wants to take Nigeria to, the president recalled his well known humble beginnings, his challenges in office especially the difficulties tackling Boko Haram which he claims as a worldwide phenomenon that has only lately landed in Nigeria and his achievements so far in office.
“When I was growing up in Otuoke, a small town in Bayelsa, as the son of a boat builder, life was hard. Of nine children to my parents, only two of us survived. But I had the chance to go to school. Many did not. I worked at my studies. God smiled on me. I am here today as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and I tell you now: there is not a moment that I forget where I come from, or how tough life can be for so many of us.
“I have no sense of entitlement. I am not from a big family. I do not come from a profession or background that believes it has some God-given right to rule. I am here because of the will of the people and I will remain here because of the will of the people. I  am willing and able to serve, but I am not desperate to serve. I am living proof that Nigeria is a country that rewards hardwork, integrity and ambition. At its best, Nigeria is a country where, no matter where you come from, through honesty, hard work and by the grace of God, everything is possible.
Vision for Nigeria
DEBATE-Jonathan“I shall win this election because Nigerians know exactly who I am, and what I stand for. I fight for what I believe in. I don’t walk out of the door when the going gets tough. Nigerians know what I have delivered and I want Nigerians to know what I will deliver in the next four years. Our plan will build on the platform we have laid in the last four years, to deliver growth, prosperity, peace and justice for all. We are ready to take Nigeria to the next level.
“The future I see and work for is for a Nigeria that works for all. I see a Nigeria where mothers and children do not die due to lack of medical attention. A Nigeria where no child goes to bed hungry or is out of school because of family circumstances. In the future of Nigeria that I see, the young and the youths will receive quality and sound education that provides them access to job opportunities and a higher standard of living.  A Nigeria where the elderly have access to the medical care they require and life expectancy is significantly higher than it is today.
“A country where the old people realise the benefit of their work and the disabled are not left behind. Nigeria will be a country of equal opportunities where every child is able to attain his or her full God given potential. Indeed, my dream is that someday, a product of the Almajiri Schools becomes the President of this great country. It will be a Nigeria where justice is not measured in any currency but available even to the most vulnerable in our society. My vision is that of a Nigeria that works for all, and not just a few.
“This has been a long campaign. I welcome the challenge of a vigorous campaign. Democracy needs competition, but it should be the right type of constructive competition. It is a sign of strength that Nigerians finally have a choice. In this document, I present to you a very clear choice and path to Nigeria’s progress. It is a choice and path based on the foundations that we laid during my first administration. You will find our plan for security, education, health. Also, our plans for the economy, jobs and the different forms of infrastructure to support our growth. We have not left out the environment and how we will leverage international economic cooperation for our growth and development. Most of our plans have been costed and some are obviously a continuation and completion of what we began. This is my promise to Nigeria, a vision for the next four years.
On security, the president said:
“Boko Haram is part of an international phenomenon. It is a terror that does not know borders or boundaries. We understood this from the beginning. Nigeria was on the right side of the argument in Mali against the extremists; and in support of democracy in Ivory Coast, Guinea, Niger, Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau. What we support abroad, we champion at home: democracy, freedom and the rule of law. It is a proud record and a reflection of Nigeria’s role and responsibilities in Africa and the broader community that we have upheld and deepened.
“We have formed a formidable team with Cameroon, Chad and Niger to effectively dismantle Boko Haram. In fact, everywhere that terror has been successfully tackled, it is through partnership. And that is what this government has championed. In the past four years we have worked hard to improve the capacity of security agencies. We have provided specialised training to our armed forces, established police academy in Kano to beef up policing capabilities. In addition, we have now provided better and improved equipment to our security agencies. This process is ongoing. We have made these investments in order to improve the capacity of security agencies to protect all Nigerians.
“There is still a real risk of further terror attacks, against the kind of soft, innocent target of which there are so many across the country. And there will be further battles ahead. But Boko Haram’s claims of a Caliphate have been shown to be as empty and bankrupt as the rest of their hateful philosophy. Nigeria remains one, and undivided. We shall root out Boko Haram.

My plan to defeat Jonathan and Buhari — Onovo, NCP presidential candidate

In this interview, the Presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party, NCP ,Mr. Martin Onovo maintains that there is no party that can defeat NCP in a free and fair election. Excerpts:
By Akoma Chinweoke & Achilike Anthony
For a country that shed military rule a decade and a half ago, would you say democracy has taken root in Nigeria?
We would say that democracy is not taking root in Nigeria. We would say that criminology has taken root in Nigeria. We say this because, several criminal acts are freely used with impunity in Nigerian politics. Acts like thuggery, rigging, forgery, perjury, etc. For democracy to take root, the two pillars of democracy must be in place.
The pillars are the ‘Rule of law’ and the Integrity of the ballot.Without one or both, it cannot be called a democracy. In the current Nigerian case, the Constitution and the Electoral act are the fundamental laws for elections in Nigeria. Both are commonly violated with impunity.

Currently, Gen. Buhari’s certificate issue is still unresolved. The associated perjury is also ignored. At the same time, Dr. Jonathan raised funds in violation of several election finance laws. Democracy cannot exist with lawlessness because democracy requires first, the ‘Rule of law’.
The process of coming to power by many of our rulers is criminal. So, mostly criminals find it easy to come to power. Alhaji Maitama Sule rightly pointed out that the actual process of coming to power involves rigging, election violence, political assassination, abuse of state power and bribing of judges and lawyers. Some judges have been previously indicted. So if you are doing all that, rigging, violence, assassination and bribery to get to power, then, you are a criminal. And the system of such government can be called a criminocracy. We must all reject and oppose any criminocratic acts and candidates.
Following endless controversy trailing the use of card readers and military personnel at election venues. Are you satisfied with the level of preparation by INEC ahead of the elections?
Card readers were used successfully for elections in Ghana. If the card-readers are used efficiently, they can improve the integrity of the elections. We think that the field tests conducted by INEC provide an excellent opportunity to identify all issues with the card-readers and fix them prior to the elections. We must ensure that only qualified and registered voters can vote. We must also ensure that no voter can vote more that once.
It has been widely reported that parties in power are cloning PVCs (another in the long list of criminal electoral practices). There are also public reports that same parties are buying up PVCs from registered voters.
We would keep wondering how the cloned or purchased PVCs will be used by the parties. On the use of the military, we must insist that we have always used the military to support internal security during elections. This is the practice. With so many unlawful but powerful private armies in Nigeria, it is clear that the Nigerian Police alone cannot provide robust security for elections.
With multiple fatalities in several states during the primaries of the ruling party, it will be inappropriate not to expect serious security issues during the elections. We will need the military to support civil security arrangements. With regards to the court judgment against the use of the military, it can be vacated by a superior court.
INEC must be pro-active and stay ahead of criminal political parties and their unlawful actions, INEC must not tolerate violations of our electoral laws but unfortunately, it seems that INEC prefers to keep silent while electoral lawlessness prevails.
A free and fair election cannot be conducted in violation of our laws. We must not accept lawlessness because it is the prelude to anarchy.
You have remained a strong critic of this administration. How do you hope to transform the country if elected the country’s president?
Nigeria is super-rich in human and material resources but Nigeria is very poor in economic terms due to corruption and bad governance. When our new NCP government is installed, we will control corruption and establish good governance. Our comprehensive strategy to control corruption is code named the 4Es anti-corruption strategy.
The 4Es represent; Education, Example, Empowerment and Enforcement. Specifically, we plan to, improve security by motivating, training, equipping and arming our security personnel. Please remember that corruption de-motivates. Also, we plan to: Double current electricity supply with only $9b in two and half years.
Your party is not as popular as the PDP and APC. How do you hope to win the election?
We will win the election because, we are the oldest party in Nigeria today and the people know our history of integrity and patriotism. Voters have also recognized and acknowledged our moral and intellectual superiority over other candidates.
It is very clear that the National Conscience Party (NCP) has fielded the very best candidates for most positions. We will win, also because, we have a better Vision than the other candidates, we are stronger and below the regular retirement age we are more experienced professionally and we are more nationally acceptable.
